Hello teachers and administrators
Saturday, 10 April 2010 09:08

September is almost here, dont forget to book your daytime classes with UCanDoIt early to ensure your dates are available.

We are also available for lunch and after school programs that run for 6, 8 or 10 weeks.  The students build a larger more detailed project over the 8 weeks period.  Please call the office if you would like to hear more about these programs and projects.

Looking forward to working with you in the coming school year.  Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Featured projects for Spring/Summer 2010

We would like to thank everyone who visited us at the Canada Day event at Stan Wadlow park and to everyone that stopped by our booth at the Youth Day event on July 25th at Dundas Square. The children all had a great time building windmills and boats.  Hope to see you next year the the same events.

The irresistible duck is one of our most popular projects for the younger classes. This lovable toy moves its wings up and down as it is pulled. This project provides a simple understanding of the conversion of one type of motion (circular) to another (reciprocal). Spring--time for a bird house!! This "bird duplex" provides not only the fun of building, but perhaps more importantly, the anticipation of checking everyday to see if the birds have chosen "my house". And can you imagine the excitement if the birds set up house and raise a family?

What are people saying about us?

Joan Debrie of Cedar Drive PS had this to say about our recent class there: "Thanks very much for a great program yesterday. The kids were thrilled with their helicopters and the teachers were very impressed with the program".

Extended Learning Program

If your school is part of the ELP, we can help enrich the experience for your children. UCanDoIt! has a large selection of projects for the JK-SK age groups. Projects can be selected to suit specific age and gender groups and to fit with current classroom studies. Classes are available in either official language. We are happy to discuss how UCDI Woodworking classes can be integrated with your extended school year to provide a continuum of learning to fit your objectives. We have a wide variety of projects and free-form creativity classes to enrich your school year.

Birthday parties

If you are looking for a unique birthday party for your son or daughter, book a UCanDoIt! Woodworking party. UCDI will arrive at your home or wherever you are holding your party with all of the material necessary to build an age-appropriate project that you have chosen for your child. Every guest at the party will take home a working project built with his or her own hands. Much better than any loot bag! Parties can be held outside, weather permitting and the safety goggles make for some really cute pictures. See the "Parties" section on our our website for details.

Welcome to the UCanDoIt! Woodworking for Children February Newsletter

Featured Project for March The Marble Board Game is the featured project this month for good reason:

Project

  • The finished project makes a great toy that will provide hours of fun - especially during that long March Break car ride
  • The project teaches the principals of motion, mass, energy and gravity ( in kid terms of course!)
  • Unlike today's more usual video games, we introduce the children to developing their games around the board, encouraging children toward the more inventive and imaginative processes of developing gaming strategies and scoring systems

Woodworking class teaches youngsters the joy of giving

With a new appreciation for the gifts they are given in their own lives, the students were eager to put a personal touch on something they would give back to their community.

Their first woodworking class was a perfect union of the spirit of giving and the simple joy that fills a child's heart when smashing things with a hammer.

On Friday, Nov. 27, Michelle Kates and Melissa Fotiadis brought their Grade 3 and 4 classes at Muirhead Public School to model airplanes and handheld pinball games. After being built during the day, the toys would be donated to the North York Women's Shelter as part of eight weeks of study on empathy and social consciousness.
